Van Gogh Exhibit at the Musee D’Orsay in Paris march11-June15th 2014

For those of you still trying to decide when to go to Paris this year here’s an event that may help you decide. A Van Gogh exhibit just opened and will continue until June 15th. 45 paintings in one room. The Musee D’Orsay in itself is an unforgettable experience, and with this exhibit it becomes “une destination incontournable.” Worth in itself the round trip ticket to Paris

French Grammar Tip – “Faux Amis”

“Faux Amis” or “False Friends” are words that sound the same or similar in both French and English but have different meanings. They are called false friends because I guess just like a two faced friend they fool you. Some my students typically say “travailler” for “to travel” the correct verb is ‘Voyager” .Example: “Je ne travaille jamais le dimanche” – I never work on Sundays – “Voyagez- vous souvent ?” – Do you travel often ?

Another common mistake is to think that “rester” means “to rest” when it really means “to stay” – ” Il aime rester seul de temps en temps” – he likes to stay alone from time to time

To rest is french is “se reposer”…it is a reflexive verb, which has its own rules. Think of “repose”, to be in repose. “J’aime me reposer le dimanche”. I like to rest on Sundays.

Here are some more examples of false friends

Attendre – means to wait NOT “to attend”

Assister – That means “to attend” NOT to assist (someone) it can also mean “to witness” as in “avez-vous assisté au cambriolage?” Did you witness the robbery?

POPULAIRE – Un film a ne pas manquer !

I saw this film at the COL-COA french film festival last April. It was hilarious and I highly recommend it. It stars popular actor Romain Duris in a take off of 50’s romantic comedies, but french style. It is playing at the Encino Laemmle this week, may move to more theaters next week ( i hope )

Populaire is an effervescent French homage to the playful romantic comedies of the 1950s, with the sly humor, vibrant color and spirited music of the era, evoking a period that became a turning point in the working lives of women around the world. Shy and awkward, 21-year-old Rose Pamphyle (Déborah François) dreams of being a secretary, but in Normandy in 1958, life beyond the confines of wife and mother seems impossible. Determined to succeed on her own terms, Rose leaves her quaint village for the nearby town of Lisieux, where her nimble two-fingered typing prompts local insurance agent Louis Échard (Romain Duris, Heartbreaker, The Beat That My Heart Skipped) to hire her as his assistant. Disorganized, clumsy and absent-minded, Rose proves to be a disaster as secretary, but a savant as a typist, even just pecking away with two fingers. The fiercely competitive Louis insists that she enter in a speed-typing contest if she wants to keep her job. Installing himself as her coach, he relentlessly drives her toward becoming the fastest typist in France—perhaps even the world! But as the small-town girl becomes a world-class contender under Louis’ tutelage, Rose realizes what she really wants and goes for it with the same verve and energy she brings to the keyboard. Also starring Bérénice Béjo (The Artist). (Fully subtitled) Official Web Site

apéro entre amis

Quoi de mieux en fin d’après midi que de partager un bon petit vin et une conversation entre copains. L’ Heure de l’Apero is the equivalent of Happy Hour in France and at Figaro Bistrot in Los Feliz it is not unusual “d’entamer une conversation avec vos voisins de table” , to begin an impromptu conversation with your sidewalk table neighbors. Here a good percentage of the clientele is french or francophone. Paris on Vermont.
